Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
