The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year break that began in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or additional to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two at most coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
